2022 Innovation Lab
Ethical Challenges of Artificial Intelligence in Biomedicine
June 2022
Charlottesville, VA
Participants
The participants were specifically selected, junior faculty level or researchers, who were seeking to engage with new, multidisciplinary teams to take on interesting, data-driven challenges in modern biomedicine. They came from all across the country and brought a balance between being more biomedically focused and those who described themselves as more quantitative.
Mentor Team
The mentors were senior investigators that brought their experience, encouragement, and support to the developing teams of junior faculty. The mentor team included Donna Chen, Renee Cummings, Brian Wright, and Caitlyn Wylie from the University of Virginia, and Elie Alhajjar from the West Point Military Academy.
At the conclusion of the 5 day lab, with the guidance of the mentors and facilitators, 29 participants created 9 research projects and aim to continue to develop these projects over the next few months and years with the intent to submit for funding and get published.

“Leaving life in the outside and focusing on science here at the resort with the Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab in Virginia. Ideas are sparking and energy is very high! Love this.”
— Dr. Diana Ferro, BDSIL 2022 Participant
“What a phenomenal group of BDSIL participants we had for this year's theme on the ethical challenges of biomedical AI. So many interesting ideas, so much teamwork. It was wonderful to see everyone bringing so much energy to such a broad topic. I eagerly await seeing the progress they make in moving these ideas forward into new research manuscripts and grant applications.”
