2024 Innovation Lab

Building Partnerships for Generative AI Training in Biomedical and Clinical Research

June 2024 · San Diego, California

  • Participants

31 junior faculty and researchers from across the country were specially selected to make up our 2024 participants. They brought their ideas, data, creativity, enthusiasm, and team spirit to the workshop as they collaborated on the many issues surrounding generative AI in today’s context.

At the conclusion of the 5 day lab, participants created 8 research projects and aim to continue to develop these projects over the next few months and years with the intent to submit for funding and get published.

  • Mentors

The Mentor Team was composed of 5 senior investigators that brought their experience, encouragement, and support to the developing participant teams. Mentors met with the teams as they are forming to provide feedback, guidance, and direction. They reinforced the positive aspects of potential team projects while asking clarifying questions about areas in need of improvement.

A sincere thank you to our Mentors: Dr. Price Afriyie of University of Virginia, Dr. Besa Bauta of New York University, Dr. Maryam Vareth of University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Brian Wright of University of Virginia, and Dr. Qing Zeng of George Washington University.

  • Provocateurs

At various times during the Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab, it is important to be challenged, pushed, and encouraged. That’s where our provocateurs come in — Dr. Altman and Dr. Kasra gave short, disruptive, and thought-provoking lectures about their experiences to further inspire innovation among participants.

A sincere thank you to our Provocateurs: Dr. Russ Altman of Stanford University and Dr. Mona Kasra of University of Virginia.

Dr. Peng Chuang, BDSIL 2024 Participant

“The knowledge and skills I gained from this training will greatly benefit my long-term career development, and the challenges I faced helped me maintain my passion for science and overcome obstacles.”

Dr. Brian Wright, BDSIL 2024 Mentor

“Hearing people talk about their problems in these areas is just really fascinating. So it's really fun, and it’s been a good experience, and I was delighted to be part of it.”

"What a great BDSIL 2024 event we had in San Diego this past June! It was so fun to interact with everyone in person, tap into their energies, hear their great ideas about AI in biomedicine, discuss the roles and responsibilities of developers, and what the future holds for AI in the lab and in the clinic. The range of projects from this year's activities is particularly exciting and we hope that the interdisciplinary teams take them forward as new research papers and innovative grant applications!"
