Professor Brian Wright will talk about the road that led to the incredible explosion of Generative AI that we are currently experiencing. He will also talk about the high level architectures that allow for Large Language Models to be so effective and conclude with implications for research moving forward.   

2024 BDSIL Mentor Dr. Brian Wright is an Associate professor and Director of Undergraduate Programs in the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia. Prior to this appointment Dr. Wright was the Director of George Washington University's Graduate Data Science programs and served as a faculty member teaching Machine Learning, Introduction to Data Science, and Capstone courses on an annual basis. He also co-founded George Washington University’s Data Science Institute. Prior to joining George Washington University, Dr. Wright organized and led interdisciplinary teams of researchers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville as the Assistant Director of the National Defense Business Institute, a government-oriented institute that focused on applying advanced analytical techniques in the federal space and worked for the DoD as a consultant and federal employee for 10 years. Dr. Wright is also the founder of DS Labs LLC and data science consultancy that focuses on educational program development, algorithm construction, and data science-focused research and development efforts. His research sits at the center of Education and Data Science, and he holds degrees in Economics, Public Administration, and Higher Education. He is currently working to develop predictive algorithms to increase Algebra 1 success in K-12 settings.
